Blato

Blato is the town situated in the middle of the island on the main island road, 40 km from Korcula, 4 km away from the sea and only 7 km from Vela Luka.

Archeological finds witness to the existence of a settlement in Blato in the prehistoric and Illyrian times. The prehistoric inhabitiant of Blato was a shepherd, hunter and fisherman. Several early Christian churches were built in Blato and around it.

The field of Zlinje divides the South and North part of Blato with one of the most beautiful elm tree alley in this part of the Mediterranean. A small hotel, "Lipa", is in the middle of Blato.

The "Blato" modern wine Cellar produces wines from the field of Blato and other regions of the island. Blato is also an industrial centre. The "Radez" firm has a world-wide reputation for producing the steel hatches.

Within the town of Blato there is a Church of All Saints with treasure and belfry aside with a loggia where most summer cultural performances take place.

Blato's rich history, the struggle of its inhabitants to save the island from the pirates and invaders, is shown in very attractive and famous knight play "kumpanija". A Sward dance "Kumpanija" takes place in the square in front of the Church of All Saints, on the so-called "plokata", every week during summer.
